Our next destination in Rwanda would be the lakeside town of Kibuye along the shores of Lake Kivu, a large freshwater lake which makes up the entire western border of western Rwanda. Lake Kivu, once suspected to be the source of the Nile, and later confirmed not be, is one of many large lakes along East Africa's rift region. Kibuye a smallish town situated on the hills above lake offers great views of the turquoise hued water and scattered islands.
After one of our longest and most complicated travel days we found ourselves in the capital of our second African nation - Kigali, Rwanda. One of the nicest cities in all of Africa, Kigali is a modern city situated on beautiful rolling hills of lush tropical green. Whether you're looking for specialty shopping or just a nice cup of coffee all can be found here.
Our stay in Mwanza and our 16 hour long complicated bus ride through rural western Tanzania to the Rwandan border, for a taste of what travel is like in Africa for budget travelers relying on public transportation.
