Chachapoyas – Ancient Ruins and Giant Waterfalls

Our first true destination in Peru was the high mountain village of Chachapoyas. We arrived early in the morning, after yet another all night bus ride. By now we have gotten pretty used to the overnight buses. And I can actually manage to get a few hours of sleep on them! Chachapoyas turned out to be one of our favorite destinations in Peru...

Chiclayo and the Peruvian border

Leaving Cuenca on yet another 12 hour night bus we headed for Peru and the city of Chiclayo. The roads in the Andes can be very windy, with switch back curves for hours. If you are prone to car sickness, or seasickness, bringing medication or something to prepare for it is well advised. We did not have any issues but another passenger threw up on the bus about an hour after we left the bus station...

Cuenca, Ecuador

After hiking in the mountains we moved on to Cuenca in southern Ecuador, and our last city before the Peruvian border. After yet another all night bus ride, from Latacunga we arrived in Cuenca bright and early at 6am, and walked with our big packs to the hostel. After settling in we headed out for breakfast, it was Sunday however so almost every business was closed. A note on Sundays in South America, it seems the entire continent shuts down on Sundays...
